Tangley Place
Not much is known about the origins of Tangley Place, an early Edwardian manor house. It's said that the MoD used it during WW2, and that it was converted into a post war convalescent home until 1955. The Ministry for Agriculture Fisheries and Food (MAFF) then acquired it to use the premises as a laboratory.

In 1999, an estate agent purchased the manor planning to raze it and build offices instead. The neighbourhood opposed to the project, and the council rejected several planning applications.
In January 2001, four days after yet another rejection, a fire swept through the building in circumstances the police qualified as doubtful. Despite the damage, the council carried on rejecting the next planning applications, and five more fires were reported until May 2008.
The subtlety of some estate agents will never fail to impress me.
